Benjamin McKenzie The O.C. Actor Cast As Lead In Batman Origin Series

Ryan Atwood is coming back to Fox! It was announced on Feb. 8 that ‘The O.C.’ and ‘Southland’ actor had been cast as a young Commissioner Gordon in ‘Gotham,’ the upcoming series about the origins of Batman.
The makers of Fox’s Gotham, which will show the beginnings of Batman, must have liked how Benjamin McKenzie played a policeman in the short-lived show Southland, because on Feb. 8 they caste him in the lead role of their show as Detective James Gordon. Do you like the casting call?

Benjamin McKenzie Cast As Commissioner Gordon In ‘Gotham’
For those who know the Batman story, Detective James Gordon goes on to become Commissioner Gordon, Batman’s go-between with the Gotham City Police Department. Most recently, Commissioner Gordon was played by Gary Oldman in The Dark Knight trilogy.

Interestingly, though Gotham is a Batman origins story, the superhero and his alias Bruce Wayne will not be the star of the show Fox executive Kevin Reilly previously stated that Gotham will instead center on Detective Gordon before Batman really comes to life, according to Variety. It will feature famous Batman villains, as well as a teen aged Bruce Wayne.

Benjamin McKenzie’s Batman Experience
So needless to say, this is a huge role for Ben, who has mostly had a spotty career since starring in the early 2000's classic The O.C.

His performance in the NBC/TNT cop drama Southland was critically lauded, but the show never really got off the ground and was canceled in May 2013. And besides having experience as a TV cop, Ben has also been part of the Batman world, having voiced Bruce Wayne and Batman in the 2011 animated flick Batman: Year One.
