Robert Luketic to Direct Female Action Ensemble The ExpendaBelles

After directing a mix bag of films like Killers, 21 and Legally Blonde, director Robert Luketic is going to round up some tough females for the gestating action ensemble The ExpendaBelles. Last fall, producer Avi Lerner had said Milla Jovovich, Cameron Diaz and Meryl Streep were in talks for roles, but right now nobody is set to star in the film and producers are just now coming up with a shortlist of actresses they would like to pursue. Luketic will be reunited with his Legally Blonde writers Kirsten Smith and Karen McCullah, who are scripting this estrogen-fueled match to Sylvester Stallone's successful The Expendables.
So what's the story? Well, Deadline says America’s Navy SEALs are wiped out trying to penetrate the island lair of a deadly despot who has captured one of the world’s top nuclear scientists. That means that it's time to bring in some of the world’s deadliest female operatives, who must pose as high-class call-girls shipped in by private plane to satisfy a dictator. Sounds like this could easily be the plot for some kind of Skinemax movie, but whatever. The question is just what kind of actresses will be pursued to join the cast?
If they're going with just tough women who have made a name for themselves in action roles, Sigourney Weaver, Linda Hamilton, Kate Beckinsale, Uma Thurman, Michelle Rodriguez and Lucy Liu come to mind. But big names like Sandra Bullock could also have a place in the cast. Could Luketic try to get his Legally Blonde star Reese Witherspoon in on the fun? Will younger names like Blake Lively, Chloe Moretz or Kristen Stewart get a shot? We'll have to wait and see how the casting comes together.
