The Lego Movie: Your Favorite Toys Become Your Favorite Movie
Everyone loves Legos, the construction toys that have captivated the little architect in every child, so it stands to reason that everyone should love a movie about Legos. The Lego Movie premiered on Feb. 7 with a big cast (Will Ferrell, Chris Pratt, Elizabeth Banks) and even bigger expectations. Could the carton flick live up to the hype? See what the critics thought!
‘The Lego Movie’ Reviews
New York Times
Binding The Lego Movie together is a Matrix-like conceit that turns the whole thing into an allegory about the nature of creativity and the meaning of amusement. As such, it encounters an obvious contradiction, one that bothered the 10-year-old Lego maven who accompanied me to the press screening. The overt message is that you should throw out the manuals and follow the lead of your own ingenuity, improvising new combinations for the building blocks in front of you. But the movie itself follows a fairly strict and careful formula, thwarting its inventive potential in favor of the expected and familiar.
Los Angeles Times
The Lego Movie is a massive collision of subversive humor, hyper-kinetic energy, mind-jangling design, spinning colors and about 15 million Legos, no exaggeration.
New York
I’m probably overselling it, but at one point during The LEGO Movie, I found myself thinking, “This is it. This is the one. This is the film that our entire shared experience of pop culture has been building towards.” I think it was around the time we saw a council of heroes (called “Master Builders”) made up of, among others, Gandalf, Wonder Woman, Milhouse from The Simpsons, Michelangelo, the Statue of Liberty, and the 2001 NBA All-Stars. Or maybe it was when a LEGO Batman played us his own death-metal composition (“Darkness …No parents …”) and everybody nodded along to the song’s edginess.
Rolling Stone
The brightly-imagined Lego Movie is also a wickedly smart and funny free-for-all, and sassy enough to shoot well-aimed darts at corporate branding. Satirical subversion in family entertainment is an unexpected treat, especially in a movie that also functions as a triumph of product placement.
New York Post
As cute and energetic as it is, The Lego Movie is more exhausting than fun, too unsure of itself to stick with any story thread for too long. The action scenes are enthusiastic, colorful but uninvolving, like an 8-year-old emptying a bucket of plastic blocks.
Okay, so we’ve got one hater in the bunch. But majority rules here say that you should get off your butt and go see this movie. And take the kids, obviously!

The Tonight Show Leno Says Goodbye In Heartfelt Final Episode
Ladies and gentlemen, the chin has left the building. Late-night legend Jay Leno hosted his final episode of The Tonight Show on Feb. 6, vacating a position he’s held on and off since May 1992. It was a bittersweet hour, full of jokes and reflections, as Jay looked back on his incredible career.
“When I started hosting, marijuana was illegal and you could smoke cigarettes anywhere you wanted,” Jay cracked during his monologue, giving his audience which included his loving wife, Mavis an idea of just how long he’s been playing the late-night game.
Jay also took a shot at Justin Bieber during his opening monologue, which was obviously one of HollywoodLife.com‘s favorite moments of the hour. We also enjoyed seeing Miley Cyrus even if she was putting a dent in Jay’s car.
Jay Leno’s Last Episode: Billy, Garth And Kim?
Jay’s final guest was none other than Billy Crystal, who also served as his very first guest back in the early ’90's. Billy was an inspired choice, but the guest people are more likely to talk about tomorrow is Kim Kardashian, who surprised Jay with a parody song from The Sound of Music.

Yes, you read that right. Kim sang.
“So long, farewell, tonight I told my folks,” she sang, straight from the nose. “And now, I won’t be the butt of Leno’s jo-okes.”
I kid, but honestly, it was pretty funny.
In keeping with the evening’s musical theme, country superstar Garth Brooks was more than happy to lend a hand and a few strings for Jay’s final bow.
Jay Leno’s Last Episode: Closing Thoughts
Jay will definitely be missed from late night he recently said he has no plans to take another stab at it but I’m confident Jimmy Fallon will be a worthy replacement. Though Jimmy didn’t make an appearance, as many speculated, he did get a brief shout-out from Jay.
“I’m really excited for Jimmy Fallon,” he said. “It’s fun to be the old guy and see where the next generation takes this great institution.”
And ever the class act, Jay ended with a quote from the eternal Johnny Carson: “I bid you all a heartfelt good night.”

‘The Originals’ Recap: Celeste’s Assault Ends In Tragedy
It’s official: Klaus (Joseph Morgan) has 99 problems, and witches are all of them! Celeste and her fellow death-cheaters put the Mikaelson family through hell on the Feb. 4 episode of The Originals, eventually resulting in the death of one of their closest allies. … OK, fine, more like one of their closest frenemies.
A Moment Of Silence For Sophie DevereauxYes, in the final moments of this week’s nail-biting episode, Miz Sophie Devereaux (Daniella Pineda) found herself bleeding out on the city streets — and at the hand of her just-revived niece, Monique, no less! It seems Celeste’s coven is growing stronger by the day, which is why I’m counting down the seconds until Davina (Danielle Campbell) returns to take them out. Come on, you know that’ll happen eventually.
Daniella Pineda InterviewTake Our PollIn all seriousness, though, I was sad to see Sophie go. Her presence has never been stable — she flip-flops between sides more than the footwear of the same name — but Daniella’s portrayal has always been solid. Besides, with all these witches coming and going as they please, who’s to say she’s even permanently dead?
Dances With WerewolvesHayley (Phoebe Tonkin) used the full moon as an opportunity to commune with her estranged furry family, but she got more than she bargained for when she met Jackson (Nathan Parsons) — her hunky future husband! Well, alleged future husband.
Truth be told, Jackson’s not a bad option, especially now that Elijah (Daniel Gillies) has decided to go all ‘noble’ and not interfere with his brother’s baby mama. (Wait, I keep forgetting that Hayley is pregnant! I must stop shipping her with all these non-baby daddies.)
Like all parties in the TVD/Originals universe, things quickly went south, as a pack of wolves ambushed Rebekah (Claire Holt) in the woods and the witches trapped Hayley in a burning house. Hayley and Jackson managed to make it out alive thanks to Elijah’s superhuman chivalry, but I can’t say the same for Rebekah, who remains very much in peril.
Kiss Of DeathIt should also be noted that Elijah is more than just a dashing gentleman with perfect hair and a keen eye for fashion; he’s also a genius. He saw right through Celeste’s disguise, but sadly, wasn’t able to stop her from working her magic on him — literally. A poisoned kiss (!!!) rendered him nearly powerless, forcing him to use his last ounce of strange to save Hayley.
Oh, and just as Shannon Kane told me, Celeste is not a fan of Elijah’s lady friend, which she made very clear tonight. ”She has no idea how dangerous it is to be loved by you,” she said as she worked her magic against Elijah.
And while we’re talking about romance, those hoping for more closeness between Klaus and Cami (Leah Pipes) probably loved the twosome’s interactions this week, as he lent a hand — and about a quart of his own blood — to break the hex on her uncle.
